The Joker Manor and the Future of LEGO Roller Coasters

The Joker Manor and the Future of LEGO Roller Coasters

Today in LEGO news, we’ve got yet another “The LEGO Batman Movie” set reveal.  This new set features the jokerized Wayne Manor set piece from last year’s LEGO Batman Movie.   If you are getting tired of this theme, you’re not alone!  We’re deep into the marketing cycle for “The LEGO Ninjago Movie” that has just been released, so maybe you are asking yourself – “But why though?!?”  Us too!  However, we’ve noticed that there is a lot about this new set worthy of discussion.  So, let’s have a look at this 3,444 piece behemoth of a set, shall we?

Front side of Lego Set # 70922 Joker Manor

First, the bad news – there are a lot of new and exclusive (at the moment) parts, pieces and minifigures in this box.  With a price tag of $269.99 for the set, buying the minifigs out of the box is going to cost you on the secondary market.  Disco Batman, Disco The Joker, Disco Batgirl and Disco Robin are all brand new iterations for these popular characters, that you can only acquire through this set.  This set also features Robin and Alfred in brand new battle suits – Classic 1960’s Batman for Alfred, and Nightwing for Robin.

Beyond minifigures, there are a lot of easter eggs in this set that we will discuss over on our instagram page.  For now, what we were most interested in is the roller coaster that encapsulates Joker Manor.

Backside of Lego Set # 70922 Joker Manor

The coaster in this set is there to carry this three car roller coaster train.  Both the primary train piece, and each bit of track appear to be new molds!  The roller coast track has curves for corner turns, inclines, and also downward slopes.  No, sorry – no vertical loops (don’t be greedy!).  From what we can identify in the image above, there are to be several new track elements:

  • a 90 degree curve, about 16 studs wide
  • a simple ramp track, about 16 studs wide
  • 8 wide straight track
  • 2 Steep Ramp sections, one to go up, one to go down, each appearing to be 16 studs in length.

Coaster Feature of Lego Set # 70922 Joker Manor

Of course, this isn’t the first coaster to be released by LEGO.  Last year the Friends theme park lineup featured a roller coaster, but that set came with a track loop comprised of existing narrow gauge track, in a new color (medium azure).  The Joker Manor set is launching a new track type!

41130 Friends Roller Coaster

This isn’t even a fresh concept, as coasters have been created by hardworking fans for years.  We’ve seen technic style ball contraptions, flex tube track set ups, and even this amazing LEGO System track set up by Ryan, TheBrickMan over on flickr.

Corporate Roller Coaster

So, speculation time – is a fully realized Creator themed LEGO Roller Coaster on the horizon?  This would be great news for any LEGO City fan that has a theme park in their set up!  There are custom kits available, of course – but those can be prohibitively expensive.  Not that this set is a giveaway by any means…  What do you think?  With these new roller coaster parts – new track, and the cars are custom made, with built in wheels, and given that there is a creator expert mixer, carousel, and ferris wheel, does this mean there is a LEGO rollercoaster coming next year?

Lego Ferris Wheel and Merry go Round

Let’s wait and see – in the meantime we eagerly await seeing how you all will figure out how to motorize this new coaster set up.

Amazon Releases The LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Ultimate Batmobile #70917 Early, and at a 15% Discount!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusreddittumblrmail

Update:  Sorry folks – the 15% discount appears to have been discontinued…

This is interesting – amazon.com has the LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Ultimate Batmobile set, #70917, available for sale today.  That is two weeks early, by our calculations.  Not only that, they are offering it at a 15% discount.  This set has 1456 pieces, and 2 exclusive minifigures – Alfred Pennyworth and Polka Dot Man.  Not a bad deal right out the gate!

The set also features a few other minifigures, but Batman and Batgirl are easily available in other Batman Movie sets, and you could find the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz in a LEGO Dimensions Video Game level pack.  But this time you actually get flying monkey minifigures.  In the Dimensions pack, the flying monkey was a brick built set.

So, again – this set has been unexpectedly released early by amazon.com, and is also being offered at a great 15% discount!

Front Page Deal Alert: 76057 Spider-Man: Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge Building Kit (1092 Piece)

facebooktwittergoogle_plusreddittumblrmail

One of our favorites sets from the super heroes line up is currently on heavy discount over at amazon this weekend.

This set has over 1000 pieces, and includes a whopping 7 minifigs!  The included minifigures are Spider-Man, Spider-Girl, Scarlet Spider, Green Goblin, Scorpion, Kraven the Hunter and Aunt May!

At $61.99, this set is on sale for nearly 40% off.  We haven’t seen it this cheap since a recent bogo event at Target!  At this price, it makes sense to pick up two, since the set is set up to be connected to itself, creating a complete bridge.

The LEGO Group unveiled its latest entry in their celebrated Modular Building lineup this afternoon. Rumors have spread for weeks regarding this set, and the name that most often came up turned out to be correct – Set #10255, is to be called ‘Assembly Square’.  This new set celebrates 10 years of Modular building projects, a theme that Lego launched in 2007, with their Cafe Corner set:

Cafe Corner has become quite a collectible, it is currently available on amazon at the bargain price of $2838!  Or, 20 times its original selling price of $139.99!  Cafe Corner was followed by fan favorites Green Grocer, Market Street,  Fire Brigade, and more.  You can learn more about the rest of the modular sets that have been released since 2007 over on the Modular page of the LEGO Wikia.

With Assembly Square, LEGO provides an interesting new Modular.  Here, see for yourself!

2016 LEGO Colour Palette – New Dark Red confirmed?

facebooktwittergoogle_plusreddittumblrmail

Hi LEGO Friends!

Just a quick post today, a confirmation of sorts.  A conversation topic that comes up a lot during our LEGO User Group Meetings is color variety within LEGO parts and pieces.  Specifically, color tone differences from one brick to the next, likely due to variations in the plastic mix used during the manufacturing process.  Think of this as you would the subtle difference between one can of paint to the next, and how the hardware store always suggests mixing the cans at home.

Our favorite color is DARK RED, and this is one color that is most often found to be guilty of this color variation from one brick to the next…  In fact, we’ve often complained that the color doesn’t even come close to matching itself from one set to th enext, especially from year to year.  For example, look at the dark red brick featured in the Knights Kingdom line:

Knights Kingdom 8800
Knights Kingdom 8800

And now compare that to the dark red featured in last years pirates line up:

LEGO 70410 Soldiers Outpost
LEGO 70410 Soldiers Outpost

The newer dark red is muted, much less bright, and even leads towards brown.  A subtle difference in these pictures that is much more apparent when held side by side in person.

Fortunately, the LEGO Group periodically publishes their colour palette, and we just received a copy from the LEGO Ambassador Network.

On the 2016 color chart, Dark Red is now referred to as NEW DARK Red:

2016 LEGO Colour Palette
2016 LEGO Colour Palette

On the previously available 2013 LEGO Color Palette, it has the same color ID, but is referred to as simply DARK Red:

2013 LEGO Colour Palette
2013 LEGO Colour Palette

Interestingly, this color has been referred to as NEW Dark Red since at least 2011 on the pick a brick section of LEGO’s parts and pieces website.

The Knights Kingdom set we use for comparison was released in 2004, so the formulation change followed that production year at some point, but the color ID of 154 was never changed.  Perhaps this color has always had variation problems and was reformulated, but not to a degree where a new color id would be mandated by the LEGO group?

But, considering this is the same company whose naming convention for Tan and Dark tan is Brick Yellow and Sand Yellow, maybe we shouldn’t get so worked up over the names on the chart!

Press Release content and images included below…

The LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS: the art of engineering and design in 2,704 elements

One of the latest models in the legendary 911 family, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, is appearing as a detailed LEGO Technic model. The exclusive
LEGO set of the exceptional sports car, which has been developed in close conjunction with Porsche AG, will initially be available at shop.LEGO.com from June 1st, 2016, as well as in the 13 LEGO stores throughout Germany and Austria. It will be available in other stores from August 1st, 2016.

Like every sports car with the Porsche emblem on the hood, the LEGO version of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS also combines design, performance, and functionality. Still concealed in black-and-white foil as a mystery model at the Nuremberg toy fair late January, the color of the characteristic bodywork has now been revealed and shines in bright orange. Thus, it corresponds to the special coating of the original sports car in lava orange authentically.

The model, which has 2,704 elements, also delights the beholder with sleek, aerodynamic lines and an adjustable rear spoiler. Besides many authentic features, the packaging and accessories that come with this complex LEGO Technic model also contribute to a building experience rich in variety: among other things, the box contains a comprehensive collector’s book with exclusive background information on the development of the model. Furthermore, the elements of the individual assembly groups are packed in separate boxes for the first time and, together with the detailed instructions, provide an insight into the assembly process of the actual vehicle.
